Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy - Moms Across America

Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

Are you pregnant? Are you concerned about what foods to avoid?

Our Moms Across America number 1 recommendation is to eat 100% organic. Commit yourself to providing toxin free food to your baby while pregnant and breastfeeding. Now is the time to think of “treating” you and your baby with healthy organic strawberries instead of conventional ice cream, nutritious fermented foods instead of processed chips, and lots of green leafy vegetables instead of fried foods. You can do it. Your baby will thank you (well, not really) but you will feel better and the health of your baby will most likely be better....leading to better sleep and happier days to come.
Our friends at ChildMode have compiled a great list for other foods to avoid. We hope this resource is of value to you and that you have a healthy, happy pregnancy.

FOOD TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY

Welcome to the wonderful journey of pregnancy. This is an amazing time to learn all about your growing baby. You’ll go through many changes during pregnancy including your eating habits. During your pregnancy, you have to be aware of what you can and cannot eat to keep your growing baby safe. We’ve made a list of foods you need to avoid while you are pregnant.

High-Mercury Fish

High-mercury fish like shark and swordfish can cause serious developmental issues for your baby if you consume it. Low-mercury fish is safe to consume like canned tuna, but limit consuming it only twice a week.

Undercooked or Raw Fish

Undercooked or raw fish like oysters and clams can be riddled with Vibrio, Salmonella, and Listeria. These bacteria can cause miscarriage, premature labor, developmental issues for your baby, or stillbirth.

Undercooked, Raw, & Processed Meats

Just like undercooked or raw fish, undercooked and raw meats can be contaminated with infections like Salmonella, E.coli, and Listeria. Processed meats like hot dogs, lunch meat, and deli meat can be contaminated as well. They are only safe to consume once heated until steaming hot.

Raw Eggs

Foods like homemade ice cream, salad dressings, and poached eggs should not be eaten because they contain raw eggs. Raw eggs can be contaminated with Salmonella which can cause premature labor or stillbirth.

Unpasteurized Milk, Cheese, & Fruit Juice

Eating or drinking anything unpasteurized is dangerous even while you are not pregnant. It is best to avoid unpasteurized items because they can contain Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. Unpasteurized foods to avoid include soft cheeses and juice from fruit stands and restaurants.

Unwashed Produce

Unwashed produce can be contaminated with bacteria like E.coli and Salmonella. Always wash all fruits and vegetables you want before consuming.

Processed Junk Food

Processed junk food is harmful for your body even when you aren’t pregnant. Stick to organic foods to insure the safety or your health and your baby’s health.

Caffeine

Caffeine got you through your tough days. But during your pregnancy, you need to reduce your caffeine intake to 2-3 cups of coffee per day. Caffeine can reduce fetal growth and birth weight.

Alcohol

Alcohol needs to be avoided at all times during your pregnancy. Drinking alcohol can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, miscarriage, and stillbirth.

Now that you know what foods to avoid during pregnancy, it’s time to eat! Remember to stick to organic healthy food. And, once your little one is here, check out these organic baby food recipes. For further information about foods to avoid during pregnancy, continue reading here.
