In February 2021, the Congressional Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy released a devastating report revealing that major baby food manufacturers knowingly sold products containing dangerous levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. Internal company documents showed that these companies were aware of the contamination and, in many cases, sold products that exceeded their own internal safety limits.

The findings were alarming:

• Arsenic levels up to 91 times the FDA's proposed action level for apple juice
• Lead levels hundreds of times above what is considered safe in drinking water
• Cadmium detected at levels that can impair kidney function and bone development
• Mercury found in products fed to infants whose brains are still rapidly developing

Despite these findings, the FDA has failed to establish or enforce mandatory limits for toxic heavy metals in baby food. Current guidelines remain largely voluntary, and manufacturers continue to self-regulate — a system that has clearly failed our children.

I urge you to co-sponsor and actively support the Baby Food Safety Act, which would:

1. Require mandatory testing of all baby food products for arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury before they reach store shelves
2. Establish strict, science-based maximum contaminant levels for all toxic heavy metals in baby food
3. Require manufacturers to publicly disclose testing results
4. Give the FDA clear enforcement authority to recall contaminated products
5. Include baby formula in all safety testing requirements, as it is often the sole source of nutrition for infants during the first six months of life

Every day we delay, millions of babies consume food contaminated with neurotoxins that can cause irreversible harm to their developing brains and bodies. This is not a partisan issue — it is a moral imperative.

I respectfully ask that you make the safety of our children a priority and take a public stance in support of stronger FDA regulations and the Baby Food Safety Act.
