China has a double standard regarding GMOs. While their officials have a sign proudly declaring the oil in their cafeteria GMO free, the school cafeterias for the children of citizens do not.

The sign in the accompanying photo hangs in the corridor of the Ministry of Education building in Beijing. It begins, “Our Canteen Does Not Use Food Containing GM Ingredients.” It further states, “The issue of whether GM food is harmful to human health is currently without consensus within academia. GM food has only appeared [in China] for a short period making it very difficult at present to appropriately assess it's impact on long-term safety. Further research and longer time is required for verification. To eliminate the concerns of diners, and to assure the safety and health of our staff members, our Ministry of Education Office Canteen temporarily will not use food oil containing GM ingredients and GM food materials. Please enjoy your food without any such concern.”

The officials must be well aware of the potential GMO health implications.  But are they aware of the increased risk to children? Perhaps they don't know how, in the US, which grows many of the GMO crops China imports to process GMO soybean oil, has an EPA allowable level of 40 ppm of glyphosate? Glyphosate is sprayed on GMOs:canola, cotton, corn and soy oil, and as a drying agent on non GMO crops such as rice, wheat, corn, soy, sugar. And .10 one tenth of a part per million has been shown to destroy gut bacteria which is the strong hold of our immune system. Glyphosate has been linked to autism, allergies, auto immune, asthma, diabetes, obesity, ADHD, alzheimers and depression...all health issues which are skyrocketing in America's children? Or do they? Is that why they themselves are avoiding them?

Moms Across America has hundreds of testimonials from Moms whose children are getting better by going GMO/Glyphosate free. We wish the parents of China to know this too. We wish the officials in China would understand the possible jeopardy they put their country in by allowing GMO/glyphosate into their school cafeterias.

Our country serves our children 31 million GMO meals in schools per day. It must be hundreds of millions more in China.

"Our school in Arkansas has 170 out of our 600 children in Special Ed and this does not include the children with autism who are in the regular classrooms. 50% of all our students have either asthma or allergies. They are ALL eating these GMO meals and for many of them they are the only food they get because we are in a low income area, and they are always hungry. The food does not have enough nutritional value and they are being devastated, I believe, because it is GMO and chemicals. Our children are being devastated. This has to stop."

but from mother to parent-official, we ask you to reconsider rejecting all GMO crops. We understand, due to supply, it will need to be a slow process, but PLEASE start with your schools. We do not want to see the children of China end up like the children of America.

1 out of 2 children are projected to have Autism in the next 20 years or sooner. This cannot happen. What will our country be like? What would our society, military, job force and economy be like? Who will take care of aging parents or bear children and continue the success of our countries?

 For the officials who would like more scientific data here is a study on how glyphosate contributed to the over growth of deadly bacteria by destroying the benficial gut bacteria at lavels far below what is allowed in our food crops.

We urge all countries to stop allowing GMO oils, food, crops and animal feed in their country, but particularly China, as you import so much GM food to feed soo many. You have the largest influence on the GM industry. Please hear the cries of American mother who, since the introduction of GMOs and glyphosate in our food supply 20 years ago,  are dealing with gut dysbiosis in their children at extraodinarialy high levels, resulting in autism, auto immune disorders, allergies, IBS, Chrohn's disease, and contributing to asthma, depression, bi polar, acts of violence, obesity, diabetes and possibly the rise in childhood cancers.

No long term studies have been show to prove that GMOs and glyphosate, which are in 85% of our processed food, are not responsible for the USA being LAST on the list of the 17 most developed countries for health.

NO studies have been done to prove that GMOs and Glyphosate are not responsible for the devastating decline of our children's health.

We believe GMOs and Glyphosate are compromising an entire generation of our children, because we see the results everyday.

"My story includes some things that might upset some people, I’m sorry if it does, but it’s the truth.  I am sharing some very personal things with you because I am real and the effects of GMOs on my life have been profound.  If GMOs were labeled it might have saved my son’s life.

It all started about three years ago in the fall of 2010, around Thanksgiving, when our son was 22 years old.  He had moved back in with my husband and I almost three years before.  He told me he was having gastrointestinal problems, predominately diarrhea that didn’t seem to be going away.  At first I thought it was a possible intestinal virus that would clear up on it’s own.  I encouraged him to drink lots of fluids and started asking him about what he had been eating.

After the Christmas holidays had come and gone, Joe wasn’t doing any better.  I had cleaned out my refrigerator of anything that had expired.  Hubby did some maintenance on our dishwasher and I even temporarily hand washed all the dishes.  Nothing seemed to help.

After the beginning of the new year, Joe went into the doctor’s to find out what was causing his malady.  Test results for bacterial, viral or parasites were done and everything showed up “normal”.  It was anything but.

I hadn’t heard about GMOs, nor did I know much about what was being done to our food.  I wish I knew then, what I know now and that is what compels me to share this with you.  However, I didn’t learn about GMOs until much later in my story.

On March 4, 2011, it was Joe’s 23rd birthday and it was also the day he took his own life.

I recently looked up just one city in the USA. Sacremento CA.

Out the top five reasons for the death of children 57% of them were conditions (SIDS, congential birth defects, anomalies etc) that we are seeing a correlation to GMOs and Glyphosate.

But studies now show that 50%of our children will have Autism in the next 20 years if we continue at the current rate.

31 Million GMO meals are served each day to our children in public schools, paid for by government subsidies.

GMO foreign proteins, and the pesticides and herbicides that are sprayed on these foods (and on 160 other non organic foods' soil) are being fed to our children without safety testing, without labels and without conclusive proof that they are not linked to the skyrocketing rise of our children's health issues. 1 out of 3 of our children now have autism, allergies, asthma or auto immune disorders. 1 out of 2 children who are obese or have diabetes also have one of these additional A's. Scientist, doctors and farmers have linked these GMOs and chemicals to our children's health issues (plus miscarriage, infertility and birth defects)  in rats, pigs and most likely in humans in studies and papers ( see our blog for Samsel interviews or "Proof of GMO Harm" article).

What are we going to do about this?

A small but mighty band said ..."We are going to take on the food in the California schools. WE are going to do something about this."  Three MAA supporters went to the California School Nutrition Conference, where 1000 food directors and school officials go to decide which food will be served to our children next year. Three people said NOW is the time for our food directors to find out about GMOs and the possible health impact on our children. This is their story.

"It was beautiful weather in Palm Springs. Driving out there, it was raining, hard at times, all through Moreno Valley, Beaumont, and Banning. And I was thinking this was not a good sign. But once I got to Cabazon, the sky cleared, and it was GORGEOUS!!!!!

It was fun gathering at the Forever Marilyn statue. Not to be missed if you get out to Palm Springs (it's there only temporarily I was told). We were a band of THREE for today - small but mighty (Mike H., Don David Y., and me). We took photos with our "Moms Across America" banner (hand-painted by Sharon K.) in front of the Marilyn Monroe statue.

Then we headed over to the convention center and we handed out flyers, and put them under windshield wipers for cars on the public street.  Standing on the corner of a parking lot across the street from the convention center, we handed a lot of flyers directly to people. A few even stopped to chat and ask questions. 

One of the vendors I talked to told me this convention will be in Sacramento next year (not so handily close). We need to look at getting a booth, and maybe offering to be speakers for a panel explaining GMO foods.

Another vendor I talked to also provides to Whole Foods. They are working on becoming non-GMO (didn't get their business name, sorry).

Mike took the flyers we had left over (a stack of about 3 inches high) and was going to return tomorrow morning to finish handing them out.

Thanks to Mike and Don David for their help today. Overall, I think we did some good (hopefully some people will actually read the flyers). And I got in a good walk in gorgeous weather. Afterwards, Mike and I ate lunch at Palm Green Cafe, the only organic restaurant (according to Mike) in Palm Springs. Very good food, and quite reasonable. I really enjoyed the lavender lemonade and salmon tacos I had.

These three wonderful people reached  THE 1000 people who decide the food in our schools with clear GMO info and Mom testimonials how their kids got better when they got off GMOs. This is huge. We will never know the results or reach of their generosity and commitment. We will never know which children will be impacted and how many people will begin to reconsider not only the food they serve their own families, but in the cafeteria to hundreds as well. We will never know if this will be the catalyst for change or just one more step in the direction for change down the road.

But we DO know that there are caring, generous people out there who will drive through rain, stand for hours and reach out to complete strangers because they care about health and freedom in America. This moves me to tears. I can't thank you enough Christine, Mike and Don.

Take a look at the book "David and Goliath" by Malcolm Gladwell. There are advantages to being the few, the "small" or the "disadvantaged." In this case, the advantage is that we can reach many with only a few. And the benefit is that we connect with amazingly kind and commited people. Our faith is renewed in America and we make a difference with uncountable thousands. All because we care.

I know we "lost" WA last week. But I say our movement is winning.

As a Mom, I feel deeply betrayed by our government and our governmental health groups which are supposed to be protecting us. Rather than just be angry, in light of the recent papers connecting glyphosate ( in RoundUp, sprayed on GMOs) and numerous skyrocketing health conditions, I decided to ask the CDC if they are in fact, looking into this alarming connection. 5 billion pounds of RoundUp is being used per year on our parks, gardens, soil and food. Thank you for your inquiry to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  We sincerely apologize for the delay in responding.

Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the United States. The pathway upon which glyphosate acts is specific to plants and some microorganisms. 

Several studies investigating the chronic toxicity potential of glyphosate in humans and mammals have been performed. Research on glyphosate and its main breakdown product has not revealed any definitive evidence of adverse endocrine-related effects in humans or other mammals. Glyphosate has been studied to evaluate its potential to induce cancer formation and has not been found to be a cancer causing chemical. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not consider glyphosate to be a human carcinogen. Some questionnaire based studies of farm workers exposed to glyphosate suggest there is a possible correlation between glyphosate exposure and late term miscarriage in pregnant workers, however, this is not definitive.

CDC is not currently investigating any link between genetically modified foods and glyphosate exposure and the development of the listed diseases including autism, obesity, allergies, asthma, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, bipolar disorder, and diabetes. The above disorders have other associated risk factors which can contribute to the development of that particular health issue. Due to the multiple known risk factors for development of these diseases, it would be very difficult to create a study that could isolate and characterize glyphosate’s specific contribution—if any—to the development of any of these diseases.

CDC does suggest that people wash foods such as fruits and vegetables prior to eating (http://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/prevention.html).

The CDC is not a regulatory agency, but rather a research focused agency and does not have the power to regulate any substance. CDC cannot mandate chemical testing on people. At this time, we know of no CDC-planned studies looking at GMOs, glyphosate exposure and any of the aforementioned health conditions including autism. The grief and outrage I feel is compounding. A mother kills her own autistic son and attempts suicide with her partner because she feels they would all be better off dead. No one knew what to do with their previous cries for help with his erratic behavior besides restrain him for days. The system failed them.

Earlier this week the parents of the girl who died from a peanut allergy, even though her father was a doctor and injected her with three epi pens, spoke out and asked for the system to do something about allergies. The system failed them.

The mothers of babies with 4-8 X more anacephaly,  ( warning image is disturbing) severe brain birth defects, in Washington state, who are downstream from the orchards sprayed with glyphosate, are not speaking up. Their grief and struggle may be too great.They may not have any idea how severely the system is failing them.

If you have read any of our previous blogs about glyphosate, GMOs, autism, allergies, stomach ulcers, cancer, IBS  and skyrocketing other illnesses, you know where this is headed. You may say that we can't blame everything on GMOs and/or glyphosate, but as a mother, for me, the correlation is clear. The autistic boy's behavior, thrashing and biting, was according to his mother, believed to be due to gastric pain. Her suspicions were confirmed when gastric specialist discovered that he had hundreds of lesions in his stomach, just like the pigs who ate GMO feed and also behaved erratically. We know now that GMO feed has this same effect on pigs: inflammation and lesions on their stomachs and fighting and biting. Scientists also know that pigs have very similar digestive systems to humans. See the pig study by Dr. Judy Carman, Howard Vlieger and other scientists here.

But not once in the news piece do they address WHY are these lesions on his stomach. Not once do they look to his food. For most of us mothers of children with allergies, autism, asthma or auto immune diseases, WHY these symptoms are occurring is not something most of our western medical doctors address. They only prescribe medicine to alleviate the pain. They do not know why.  The system fails to ask and it fails to act.

Here is the thing about failure. It is not the "be all end all", it is not conclusive. Failure is simply a failure to take action. Actions can always be taken. We always have the opportunity to take new actions.

When we Moms ask, and try to take action to get our children or ourselves tested for glyphosate the labs will not perform the test. They say "They do not do that test." We can imagine asking to be tested for "GMO foreign proteins" would get the same response. It all seems futile though, unnecessary even, especially to Moms like me who have read stacks of books to take care of our children's illness this past year... in our guts, we know...

It does not take another two year study for this mother to see that GMOs and Glyphosate, (which GMO's are doused with), are something to avoid. What outrages me is that our system is failing to ask WHY and they are failing to act NOW to protect our children, especially of the mothers who do not know about GMOs and Glyphosate.

We will do a petition...to the CDC or the EPA or the AAP...yes we will, and we will get the wording fine tuned so that they just might start to wonder if there is something to our request. But in the mean time, Moms, we need to keep sharing. Because in the end, it is up to us. Our children's lives are literally in our hands.

We need to support our millions of American Moms who are struggling every day and let them know about GMOs and Glyphosate as well. We need to support them. We can call, meet with and email our friends with kids with autism, allergies, auto immune diseases and asthma.
