South Korean Initiative Labels Foods that Help Prevent Disease

korean flagThere is a new and inspiring initiative in South Korea by iCoop to label foods that help prevent lifestyle-related diseases. The initiative was sparked by consumers fed up with their government's refusal to label GMOs, which have been shown to cause tumors, DNA mutation, allergic reactions, and various harmful health effects. The South Korean consumer advocates said enough is enough and went on the offense, saying, fine, then we will label the foods that prevent disease.

“Even in the age of 2 million cancer patients, warnings about cancer risk only apply to alcohol and tobacco, and there is no information on the foods we eat daily. “ Chairman Kim Jeong-hee said in a statement. “The Ministry of Health and Welfare has already promoted fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidant nutrients and phytochemicals as cancer-preventing foods through the 2006  National Cancer Prevention Guidelines, but labeling is not possible on these foods,” she explained the background of the new campaign.

paradesHeo Jong-shik, a member of the National Assembly’s Health and Welfare Committee, said in a written statement, “To promote the health of the people and prevent cancer, it is necessary to be able to inform about what foods to eat and how to avoid cancer-fighting ingredients. We will do our best to effectively prevent cancer in the future so that everyone is healthy in Korea.”

Moms Across America wonders - what if we did this in the United States?. Well, conveniently for the pharmaceutical company shareholder profits, labeling something as a food or supplement that can “prevent a disease” is illegal without FDA approval. (Funny that vaccines do not have to go through FDA approval first- they can have Emergency Use Authorization with no safety trials conducted, but they can claim they prevent disease). Technically, labeling foods as preventative to diseases would be illegal here. Ridiculous because the science shows that they can. Watch the movie Food Cure, for example.

organic foodMoms Across America would LOVE to see foods labeled as preventative to disease!

Our number one top recommended food would be organic foods. Organic farming methods do not permit the use of glyphosate and other pesticides and chemicals that destroy the beneficial gut bacteria,  imbalance the immune system, and can lead to cancer, liver disease, autoimmune issues, and a host of reproductive and mental health issues.

raw foodNumber two would be fermented foods. Fermented foods, which are widely and regularly consumed in Asian countries with every meal, have been shown to break down pesticides and to provide over a trillion GOOD bacteria with every tablespoon. We urge you to view fermented food and drinks such as sauerkraut, Kombucha, Apple Cider Vinegar, Keifer, yogurt, and fermented vegetables, and your new best friends and your stomach and immune system will be much happier!

But fermented foods are just the start.

There is so much information about this topic, and many studies have been done on food and cancer prevention and cancer eradication. We asked the Health Coach and founder of Food Integrity Now for more advice on what foods, in addition to organic and fermented foods,  should be labeled as preventative to disease.

In general, she said, here are ten of the best:

garlicRaw Garlic contains powerful antioxidants like allicin which has been proved to remove free radicals from your body. It also boosts immunity which is needed to fight off cancer.

Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable related to kale, cauliflower, and cabbage. It is high in phytochemicals and antioxidants, which have been proven to reduce the risk of cervical, breast, gastric, and prostate cancers. The benefits of broccoli are best raw or blanched. Also, broccoli sprouts are even more nutrient-dense and can be used effectively.

Green Tea contains catechins that have made it a superstar in cancer-fighting research. They are believed to be more powerful than Vitamin C in fighting free radical damage. Green tea has been shown to shrink tumors and inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Spinach is loaded with health benefits with vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids that your body needs to stay strong in fighting and preventing cancer. It contains flavonoids, at least 13 different ones, which soak up damaging free radicals and flush them out. It is also rich in folate and fiber, which doctors believe are essential to cancer prevention.

woman shoppingStrawberries are not only delicious, but researchers have found they slow down the growth of cancer cells. One of the compounds identified is a type of antioxidant in the flavonoid family called fisetin. Fisetin has anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties.

Carrots are a wonderful source of beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant that helps in preventing cell damage and may slow down the growth of cancer cells. Carrots contain falcarinol and falcarinol, which are natural pesticides in the vegetable that scientists believe is the reason for their cancer-fighting abilities.

Tomatoes contain lycopene, the antioxidant that causes the red color of tomatoes. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant known for preventing the formation of certain types of cancers. Lycopene is released when tomatoes are cooked.

cherriesCherries can be a powerful anti-cancer food. Research showed that extract from cherries killed breast cancer cells in vitro (test tube). In another animal study, researchers found that some cherry compounds could reduce the proliferation of human colon cancer cells.

Grapes, and in particular, grape seeds and skins, have proanthocyanin compounds. Laboratory studies suggest that they, or compounds gut microbes produced from them, may influence the expression of genes related to cancer development. Grapes also contain resveratrol, and according to research, one of the most striking biological activities of resveratrol is that it has cancer-chemopreventive potential. It has been shown that it blocks the process of carcinogenesis at various stages of tumor initiation, promotion, and progression.

Walnuts and Other Nuts.  The list would not be complete without mentioning walnuts and other nuts. The American Cancer Research Institute suggests that all nuts are anti-cancer food. Researchers are looking more closely into walnut because they contain pedunculagin. When we digest walnuts, our bodies convert pedunculagin into urolithins, which are substances associated with breast cancer prevention.
