At Moms Across America we know that it is going to take everyone - moms and dads, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, friends - to transform our food supply and our toxic, chemical environment. While dads may not be the ones to do most of the shopping for food for their family or be the ones to research the best healthcare solutions, their involvement and commitment in other ways cannot be denied and we thank them for their care and support of their families and communities. James Messina is just one dad that MAA is lucky enough to work with. We asked him to share his background on why he got involved in creating products for organic gardening. We like to get to know the good people behind the solutions we offer and hope you will too.
Happy Father’s Day to all our dads!

Growing up, we are told, time and time again, to be wary of strangers. After all, it can be hard to judge someone’s motivations if you don’t know anything about them, right? But what about the companies we trust to make the products that we rely on to make our food, build the tools we use and solve our everyday problems? I believe we should get to know them too…and I’d like to take a few minutes to tell you about mine.
My name is James Messina and in 1998 I started a company with my father, Jim, to provide the safest, most effective products we could to gardeners, professional applicators and growers who were trying to stop animal damage caused by wild and domestic animals. This company would come to be known as MESSINAS, and our very first products were sold under the brand name Animal Stoppers®. Instead of using harsh chemicals or questionably harvested animal urines to repel, we were the first company to use an effective blend of essential oils to repel animals that REALLY worked, but we had bigger plans…
You see, my dad was a former garden center owner and certified landscape architect. His father was a landscaper and a farmer back in Sicily. His father was a farmer, and so on and so on. Being a good steward of the earth is literally in my blood with generation after generation of men, on both sides of my family tree, making their life’s work with their hands in the dirt. While my green thumb is a little paler than theirs, I grew up running through my dad’s garden center, mixing soils, carrying flats and selling Christmas trees, and I believe that gardening is not just something to do: it’s a hobby that puts us back in touch with nature is the purest way possible.
But lately there’s been a lot of news about how, in an effort to make gardening and growing easier, we may be the very people killing more than just the weeds that plague our yards, parks and farms. Our use of harsh chemicals may be leading to a whole host of cancer related issues as well as other health problems. Which is why I created PULVERIZE Weed Killers.
About 5 years ago, I started seeing the push-back on products that contained glyphosate. There were rumblings that folks were looking for something else, that the safety of this ingredient was in question, but no one was doing anything to bring real change to the marketplace. It took some time, and two years to get the name right, PULVERIZE but in 2016 we launch PULVERIZE and began to take on the biggest brand in the category. By 2017 we were able to place in more than 6000 stores, and today, we have more than 10,000 retailers carrying it, including select Walmarts and Home Depots.
We put our family name on every product we sell in the hopes that people will realize that there’s a real family who stands with you and behind these products. And we hope to hear from you, good or bad, about your experience with them because now that you know a little bit about us, we’re not strangers anymore.
