Ancient Grains IMPROVE Health and Gut Microbiome?

UPDATED article Oct 27, 2021

Over the past ten years, the food industry in American has been turned topsy turvy. All of a sudden millions of people can't or don't want to eat wheat....after thousands of years of major civilizations eating wheat with every meal. Suddenly, people feel rashy, irritable, fatigued, and even sick after eating a simple piece of bread. What happened? Bob Quinn, PhD. 30 year regenerative organic farmer, and author explains how upside down the food system has become- growing cheap processed food rather than healthy nutritious food in his new book Grain by Grain.

A major part of that cheap, processed food is wheat. Modern wheat (with a modern hybrid protein called gliadin which can cause allergenic intolerances), white, processed grain products, or whole grains that have high levels of glyphosate residue...have been destroying our gut microbiomes and increasing the skyrocketing autoimmune diseases for the past decade or more.

Heavy Metals In Baby Food and What We Can Do About It

Update: Parent's Choice from Walmart Recalled for High Levels of Arsenic in Rice Baby Food

A new article by Lisa Gill of Consumer Reports states, "The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that baby food manufacturer Maple Island had issued a voluntary, nationwide recall of three lots of its 8-ounce Parent's Choice rice baby cereal after a sample tested above the FDA's guidance for inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen. The products were tested as part of a routine sampling program by the FDA. No illnesses have been reported."

Immediate illness is not the only concern; however, long-term brain damage is caused by arsenic in animals and kidney function. Children are especially vulnerable due to their developing bodies.

This is also the second recall by a manufacturer for elevated inorganic arsenic levels in rice cereal for babies in less than six months. Beech-Nut issued a recall in June 2021 and announced it was permanently withdrawing from the infant rice cereal market after routine testing showed elevated levels of arsenic.

"We've reached a critical point," says Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports. "The industry appears to be unable to control the issue, and the FDA's go-slow regulatory approach is not serving the public interest."

"Baby food manufacturers should consider pulling infant rice cereal from the market until they can implement effective mitigation measures to address inorganic arsenic," he says. "Parents and caregivers deserve better."

Heavy metals in baby food have been a documented problem for several years. Tests in 2018 of 50 nationally distributed baby and toddler foods by Consumer Reports found that two-thirds had worrisome levels of at least one type of heavy metal.

Product recalled: Three lots of 8-ounce packages of Parent's Choice rice baby cereal sold at Walmart after April 5, 2021. The following product information can be found on the bottom left corner of the back of the package:

• Lot 21083, with UPC Code #00681131082907 and a "best if used by" date of June 24, 2022

• Lot 21084, with UPC Code #00681131082907 and a "best if used by" date of June 25, 2022

• Lot 21242, with UPC Code #00681131082907 and a "best if used by" date of November 30, 2022

We recommend not buying ANY rice products for baby food and making your baby food from organic ingredients. Avoid rice, root vegetables, spices, which are high in heavy metals.

We ask everyone to please get in touch with their Senators and Representatives by clicking here. A pre-written email will ask them to pass regulations to protect our babies from heavy metals urgently. If you like, you can Tweet and be automatically connected with your elected official's office as well.

Click here to sign the letter, Tweet, and speak to your elected officials to ask them to vote YES to pass the Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 today.

More details on the Consumer Reports original report are below from the article originally published March 29, 2019:

Congress Releases New Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 After Report on High Levels of Heavy Metal Contamination in Baby Food

Summary:

  • The New Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 has been presented and, if passed, will set heavy metal levels in baby food for the first time.
  • A recent Congressional report shows in-house testing from four baby food companies to have heavy metal contamination of ingredients up to 177 times higher than FDA standards.
  • These companies knew the levels far exceeded FDA allowable levels for heavy metals in water and still approved the products for sale to the public.
  • Three baby food companies did not comply and sent the Congressional Committee the heavy metal testing data as requested.
  • The highest tested ingredients for heavy metal contamination were organic and nonorganic rice products, spices, and additives.
  • The entry method of heavy metal contamination is unknown. Still, scientists suspect that heavy metals are pollutants of pesticides in fertilizer, irrigation water, or metal machinery used to grind and process food.
  • Moms Across America calls for parents to make their baby food and the FDA to require heavy metal (and pesticide) testing of all final products.

Preliminary Black Bean Nutrient Testing Results

At Moms Across America, we focus on the impact of industrial chemical farming on the health and safety of our food supply. One area of impact is the nutrient density of the food crops. Toxic agrochemicals can reduce the soil quality, microbiota, and nutrient density of our food. We have been learning a lot about regenerative organic agriculture and how it does not utilize frequent deep tilling, and can often be no-till (with cover crops), which means the soil is undisturbed and soil quality improves over time. Theoretically, the nutrient density of the soil of regeneratively and organically grown crops would increase and improve.

We decided to do some preliminary testing on nutrients to see if supporters would be interested in finding out more. We wondered, is regenerative and organically grown food more nutritious than organic and conventional? We decided to go with common food, black beans.

Scottish Mum Shares Experience on Having Village Go Pesticide Free!

Annie MacDonald
Pesticide Free Balerno

I am a mum who lives in Balerno, Scotland, just south of Edinburgh. I suffered many illnesses until age 40, which meant spending a year in the hospital as a child and being on various medications. My test results never gave me any answers.

When I turned 40, I took control of my health. Eliminating dairy and gluten, I reduced particular food and environmental chemicals (both naturally occurring and artificial). Going primarily organic, I regained my health.

Enough!

enough.jpg

We, at Moms Across America, have had ENOUGH with the following:

  • Our government allowing known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors that cause liver and kidney disease and weaken the immune system on our food.

  • Corporations lobbying our government, ghostwriting "science," and influencing policy to be in their special interest, not in our best interest.

  • Our government mandating medical procedures, dismissing the entire professional experience of physicians and personal bodily autonomy.

  • The EPA allowing chemical products to be approved with testing on only 1 ingredient and not the full formulation.

  • The CDC board members are allowed to hold patents for vaccines - and profiting from the very things they are supposed to be regulating.

  • The FDA allowing corporations to regulate their own GMO products and releasing them into the marketplace unlabeled.

  • The FCC allowing wireless technology in our children's classrooms and antennas outside our homes that expose our families to harmful radiation without our consent.

All these things are happening for one primary purpose- for corporations to make more money and increase their power.

Walk IN for Health Freedom

This week President Biden announced a federal mandate that will require employers with over 100 employees to require their workers to get the COVID vaccine, even though the clinical trials have yet to be completed. We find it outrageous that the members of Congress and their staff are exempt from the mandate while hardworking Americans now face losing their jobs or getting an experimental injection (although the FDA approved one vaccine, the trials will not be completed until between 2022-2024) regardless of their personal decision or individual genetic disposition.

At Moms Across America, most of us have children with chronic health issues. On that journey, many of us have had to go through extensive and expensive genetic testing to sort out the factors contributing to their issues.

If there is anything that we have learned about health, it is the following:

  • Every person has a unique genetic disposition
  • Many people, up to 50% (1 in 3 Chinese women, 1 in 4 Caucasians), have gene mutations like the MTHFR genes that can lead to impaired ability to detox toxins. And they cannot afford genetic testing
  • The inability to detox toxins such as those found in food, polluted air and water, and vaccines can harm people
  • Some of that harm can be lifelong or life-threatening

For these health reasons, and many other moral, religious, and ethical reasons, Moms Across America does not support mandating ANY medical procedure, especially ones that have already been shown to harm over 1.4 million people and are not effective in the transmission or contraction of a disease.

Many are considering a WALK-OUT Wednesday action, and it is important to stick together for personal health freedom.

If you have had enough of the mandates and government intrusion into our health decisions you can join also the #ENOUGH movement to connect with others who feel the same.

We also ask you to consider a WALK-IN.

Tell the CA EPA What You Want to See on the Roundup Label

The CA EPA operates separately from the federal EPA and has long been a leader in somewhat safer environmental policies. On Sept 9, 2021, they are holding a hearing at the Office of Environmental Health Hazards Assessment regarding what the exact wording should be on the label of glyphosate herbicides aka Roundup, Ranger Pro, and 750 other generic brands when used in California. What happens in California affects trade and policy around the world.

Please see below and consider participating. EVERY VOICE MATTERS and you do not have to be an expert. You can simply be someone who suspects glyphosate herbicides affected your health, your family's health, your pet, bees, or marine life near you. The OEHHA office needs to know we citizens are serious about protecting life on the planet and creating healthy communities. Please speak up with us.

We have included our perspective in this article but urge you to use other studies from our data page to touch upon the many other ways glyphosate harms life and therefore should be accurately labeled as such.

Thank you

The True Savings of Organic Food

An Account of Our Research Process and Findings

By Irene Fearnley and the Moms Across America Team

It’s no secret that cooking meals at home are more cost-effective than going out to eat. But what if you want to eat 100% organic, isn't that more expensive?

In our new research, we show that it is still more cost-effective even if the ingredients are 100% organic. In addition to helping your wallet, cooking meals at home also has the potential for significant health benefits; since you yourself are in control of the products and ingredients you buy, it is easier to make eating organic, non-GMO whole foods a priority. When it comes to eating your meals outside the home, you may be inundated with unhealthy and non-sustainably grown options like the fare offered at fast-food chains. Even at other restaurants, you can never be too sure about the types of ingredients being used and where they are sourced from. To put it plainly, when you decide to cook from home you are making the decision that is truly best for your health and that of your family.

Is it Insensitive to Advocate for Organic Food to Low Income Populations?

America has been in a health crisis for over a decade. Heart disease and cancer have each been killing nearly 2000 people a day, long before COVID. At this rate, we are set to bankrupt our nation with health care costs in less than 8 years (unless we keep printing money of course).  Either way, our society is being severely impacted by the cost of health issues.

And yet, the number one disagreement when we at Moms Across America insist that organic, regeneratively grown food is essential for creating healthy communities and local food security, is that it “costs too much.” A common argument of GMO proponents is that educating low income people about the benefits of organic leads to them feeling “embarrassed and ashamed because they cannot afford it.” This implies that our mission for everyone to have access to healthy organic, regeneratively grown food is somehow insensitive and maybe even discriminatory.
